Matthew 1
Matthew opens with a genealogy and a birth that he names as fulfillment of Isaiah’s Immanuel sign.
What happens in this chapter
The genealogy runs Abraham–David–exile–Christ in three fourteens (Matthew 1:1–17), naming Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and “the wife of Uriah.” Then Joseph’s crisis: Mary is found with child from the Holy Spirit; an angel tells him to take her and name the child Jesus (1:18–21). Matthew quotes Isaiah 7:14 and explains Immanuel — God with us (1:22–23). Joseph obeys (1:24–25).
Why it is here
Matthew is teaching who Jesus is: son of Abraham and David, and God with us. The genealogy’s unexpected women and the exile block any simple royal romance. Isaiah 7:14 is not a footnote; it is the Evangelist’s claim about this conception.
