Psalm 23
A short trust psalm: the Lord as shepherd and host. It is more than a funeral reading.
What the psalm says
The speaker lacks nothing under the Lord’s shepherding: pasture, still waters, restored soul, paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:1–3). Verse 4 enters the valley of the shadow of death and still addresses God as “you.” Verses 5–6 shift to a banquet: table, oil, overflowing cup, and dwelling in the house of the Lord.
How the rest of Scripture hears it
Ezekiel 34 promises the Lord himself will shepherd his flock. John 10: Jesus is the good shepherd who lays down his life. Psalm 23 is a trust psalm in the Psalter before it is a Christian funeral text — and it can be both without erasing either.
