What do Ephesians 2:8–9 mean about faith and works?

Dead, made alive, seated
Ephesians 2:1–7 describes the readers as dead in trespasses, then made alive with Christ and seated with him. Verses 8–9 explain the means: grace, through faith, not from yourselves, the gift of God, not of works, so that no one may boast. The “that” of verse 8 reaches back to this whole salvation.

Created for good works
Verse 10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” Works are the purpose of the new creation, not the currency that buys it. James 2 is not a rival gospel; it refuses a faith that never acts. Traditions divide on how to relate Paul and James; say so, and read both.
