What does John 3:16 mean?
John 3:16 is the Gospel’s most quoted sentence. Its meaning is in the night conversation with Nicodemus, not in isolation.

Nicodemus and new birth
Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one sees the kingdom without being born from above (John 3:3–8). The lift-up of the Son of Man (3:14–15) recalls the bronze serpent in Numbers 21: looking in faith brings life. Then comes 3:16: the Father’s love for the world, the gift of the only Son, and the alternative of perishing or eternal life for the one who believes.

Love, world, and judgment
“World” in John is the created order under darkness that God nevertheless loves (cf. 1:10–11; 3:17–19). The same chapter says that unbelief is already judgment because light has come. John 3:16 must be read with 3:17–21: the Son is sent to save, and people love darkness rather than light.
